O značce Omega
Společnost Omega SA sídlí v Biel/Bienne ve švýcarském kantonu Bern. Je členem skupiny Swatch Group. V současnosti je předsedou představenstva Nicolas G. Hayek a presidentem společnosti Stephen Urquhart. Předchůdce jednoho z nejznámějších symbolů švýcarského hodinářství byl založen v roce 1848 v La Chaux-de-Fonds třiadvacetiletým Louisem Brandtem, který nakupoval součástky místních řemeslníků a sestavoval z nich kapesní hodinky natahované klíčkem. Louis prodával své hodinky od Itálie po Skandinávii, ale hlavním odbytištěm pro něj byla Anglie. Po jeho smrti v roce 1879 se jeho synové Louis-Paul a César rozhodli z důvodu nepravidelných dodávek nekvalitních součástek ukončit kompletaci a soustředili se na vlastní výrobu a získání přehledu nad kvalitou. V lednu roku 1880 se celá firma přestěhovala do malé továrny v Bielu, kde mohla najít více zaměstnanců a lepší zdroje; o dva roky později se firma přestěhovala do vyklizené přádelny ve čtvrti Gurzelen, kde sídlí dodnes. O úspěch a pokračování vývoje se postaraly první sériově vyráběné kalibry Gürzelen, Labrador a Cal. 1894. Po smrti Louise-Paula a Césara Brandtových se k řízení rodinné společnosti dostal Paul-Emile, kterému bylo pouhých 23 let. Bez něj by ale Omega nebyla dnes tím, čím je. Ekonomické problémy vyvolané první světovou válkou se snažil od roku 1925 řešit sloučením s Tissotem, což se mu podařilo v roce 1930 pomocí koncernu SSIH. Ten se později stal největším švýcarským výrobcem hodinek a třetím největším výrobcem hodinek na celém světě. Krize a recese ve druhé polovině sedmdesátých let vedla k záchraně díky spojení s druhým švýcarským hodinářským obrem ASUAG do holdingu SSIH-ASUAG, který se později proměnil v SMH a v devadesátých letech byl přejmenován na Swatch Group. Omega dodnes zůstává jednou z nejprestižnějších značek celého koncernu. Omega se poprvé objevila na olympiádě jako oficiální časomíra v roce 1932, a to na letních hrách v Los Angeles, na zimních hrách 2006 v Turíně. Stejná úloha ji čekala na letních olympiádách - 2008 v Pekingu, 2012 v Londýně, na zimních hrách 2010 ve Vancouveru a nyní v Sochi, v roce 2014. Kromě podpory význačných golfových hráčů a plavců se Omega věnuje i kolektivním vodním sportům – jako oficiální časomíra a sponzor jachtařského týmu Emirates Team New Zealand uvedla v roce 2007 na trh chronograf Seamaster NZL-32, pojmenovaný po lodi, která v roce 1995 získala prestižní America’s Cup. Když v roce 1965 technici z americké NASA vybírali chronograf pro vesmírný program Apollo, byl Speedmaster jediným modelem, který dokázal absolvovat přísné testy bez potíží. Hodinky Omega Speedmaster Buzze Aldrina se tak staly první časomírou, kterou měl člověk na zápěstí při výstupu na povrch jiného vesmírného tělesa, než je naše planeta.
